Hockey. The Junior Girls hockey team played against Loreto St. Stephen's Green winning 2-1. In the first ten minutes of the game, Rose scored the first goal for the girls. The girls were dominating the ball. ElleAnna was playing very well in centre midfield. Brianna read the game brilliantly in the backline. Faith and Leila communicated well between each other in defence. We received a short corner in which Ameera scored a goal bringing the score to 2-0.
Aoibhin was the engine of the team keeping the ball moving to a Wilson’s player at all times. Robyn held the left mid field and made it very difficult for her player to make any attacks on our goal.
Near the end of the first half a goal was scored by Loreto College. In the second half, Wilson’s started strong again. The ball was up and down the pitch, not staying on either side for long. ElleAnna worked very well in the centre getting great balls into the forwards. Sarah chased down every ball that came into the D. Player of the Match was Aoibhin.
Rugby. The First and Second Year rugby girls hosted the Mullingar U14s team. It turned out to be a very competitive game with 13 tries scored in total and ended with a score of 7 tries to 6 in Mullingar’s favour. The Wilson’s girls (many who were playing their very first game of rugby) showed great composure in attack and always kept pressure on the Mullingar girls when defending. Our stand out players included Phoenix, Maria, Isobel, Chizara, Alex and Victoria making crucial tackles, carries and leading the team by encouraging the rest of the team. They will now look forward to playing in their first blitz on Tuesday 15th in Tullamore.
Thursday 10th October.
Soccer. Wilson’s Senior Boys soccer team played their first match of the season today beating St. Columba's of Killucan 4-2 in the Cup.
Despite an early setback with St. Columba's taking the lead, it didn't take Wilson’s long to equalise with a fine left foot finish from Manuel after a rushed clearance by the 'Columba's keeper.
1-1 at half time but then two quick goals put Wilson’s in the driving seat. The first goal was a close finish by Cole after good work by Victor. The third was from the penalty spot with Stefan giving the keeper no chance .
Victor added a fourth before a late consolation by Columba’s to make the final score 4-2. Onwards to Round 2 and more of the same hopefully!!
Rugby. The Junior Boys Rugby team travelled to Edenderry RFC to play the hosts under 16 team. For the most part this game was very competitive with two late tries sealing a 38-22 win for WHS.
Wilson's made the best of the early exchanges with Max and an incredible individual try from David pushing WHS into a 12-0 lead. Edenderry responded with two tries of their own to lead 14-12 closing in on half time. Max added his second soon after (another length of the field effort) as it looked like Edenderry were going to score.
The second half was similarly close. WHS at times struggled with the larger Edenderry pack. Edenderry added two more tries to lead 22-14. Sam, Max and Reuben added three more tries to add gloss to the score line.
Up front both Matthews got through a lot of work while Sam and Nathan carried with purpose throughout. In the backs Tom controlled the game well, allowing Conn, David and Max ample opportunities to run at the Edenderry back line. Ross was Man of the Match with an all action display at Openside Flanker.
