Tuesday 13th March.
Hockey: The Junior Girls team and the Minor B girls team had home fixtures today against The Royal School, Cavan. The Juniors went through to the Meath & District league final with a comprehensive win. Cavan always prove to be tough opposition and today was no different. The Wilson's girls got off to a flying start with Kayla placing the ball in the top corner of the net. The girls kept the momentum going and quickly scored a second. Cavan came back hard and the Wilson's defence held firm. Siobhan had a great game spearheading the defence at centre back. The girls managed to get a third goal before half time which was a great confidenceboost after loosing to Sutton Park last week. Sophie was unlucky not to score late in the second half and the game ended with the score at 3-0. The squad will take on Dundalk Grammar next week in the final.
In the Minor B girls match an epic defence spearheaded by Chidera saw off Cavan's attempts at goal in the first half of the match. Wilson's battled bravely and sustained many injuries but still kept defending and attacking brilliantly. Despite valiant efforts and an outstanding performance by the entire team, Cavan were triumphant with 2 goals in the final moments of the second half. Hard luck Wilson's, but extremely well played!
Wednesday 14th March.
Hockey. The Senior A girls team and the Minor A Girls had matches today. against St. Wolstan's. The Minor B girls played two games - the first against St. Wolstan's and then a second against Headfort School! The First Year Boys team also played against Headfort School.
The Boy's lack of attendance at training in recent weeks really cost against a well drilled Headfort squad. There were good performances from Eoghan and Nathan. Conditions were very poor and this did not help the play from either team.
Ther was another entertaining encounter between the Senior A Girls Team and St Wolstan's with Wilson's earning a deserved victory. From the outset Wilson's dominated possession and threatened the Wolstan's goals. A quick succession of short corners resulted in an opportunity for Emily to take a great shot and score the only goal of the game.
From that point on Wilson's never looked back, they created plenty of chances but just couldn't convert. Leah in mid-field had an outstanding game and was instrumental in keeping possession and creating opportunities. Well done to all the girls and we look forward to the final.
The Minor B girls first battle of the day yielded a 0-0 draw against St Wostan's. Our defence was outstanding again today and the attack was immense. Wilsonsmissed a couple of scoring chances but resolved to do better in the later game. Game 2 v Headfort School and despite driving wind and rain in their faces, the team produced some fantastic saves in the first half only conceding two goals. Heavily battle fatigued, they faced the second half with nothing but optimism. The back line didn't eve allow the ball near the goal with Andrea and Aoibhinn leaving Headfort disappointed many times. With a final push in the last moments of the second half, team captain, Ameera scored a goal Bringing the game to a close at 2-1 to Headfort. The girls were delighted with their performance today and wish the season were only beginning!
The Minor A girls team had their best performance to date. The weather was miserable and it was bitterly cold but this had minimal effect on the girls who have improved with each game this season. Wilson's dominated the first half scoring early and applying consistent pressure to the St Wolstan's defence. They were unlucky not to score on More than one occasion. Anna was super in defence letting nothing by and Ruth was key to the midfield line. The half time whistle blew and after a quick turn around the girls were back in actin. Sadbh and Abbie were fantastic up front and it wasn't long before Wilson's hit the backboard again. The game ended 2-0 and this was a huge confidence boost for the girls who enjoyed their day tremendously even in the awful weather conditions.
Thursday 15th March.
The 1st Year Boys Rugby squad had a match against Mullingar RFC U13s at 7pm Having faced each other in a very tight game already this year, Wilson's knew it was going to be a tough game. Wilson's started brightly with Eddie who carried powerfully throughout scoring a try. Stephen also added a try in the first half along with Edward who scored his first try for Wilson's. Eddie added another before half time to leave the score 22-0.
Mullingar came back very strong in the second half. Two quick fire tries left the score at 22-14 and Mullingar playing all the rugby. Some strong defending from Ross, team captain Matthew and Pádraig helped stem the tide before Stephen and Tom added tries to add a bit of gloss to the score line. Wilson's won 32-14
In the pack Joshua and Matthew had fine games and created quick ball for James at scrum half. In the backs Matt, Scott and Isaac always looked threatening in attack. Special mention to Edward who got his first try and had to play out of position twice at hooker and flanker. He was deservedly named Man of the Match. Well done boys.
