Cricket. The 1st & 2nd Year Boys team played the first competitive cricket match of the season representing Wilson's today. They played St. Andrew's College enjoying the game and getting great match experience.
Rugby. The 1st Year Boys team hosted Cavan U13s in a friendly game to mark the end of the season. Conditions under foot were perfect for running rugby and the game didn't disappoint with 14 tries in total. 7 for each team. With both teams adding 2 conversions the final score was 39-39. Wilson's try scorer's on the night we're Ross (2), Stephen (2), Reuben, Matt and Eoghan. Eoghan's try was certainly the best try of the game intercepting the ball in his own 22 he showed great pace to go the length of the pitch to score.
Cavan must be given massive credit for their part in a super game! They constantly turned Wilson's over at ruck time and moved the ball wide at every opportunity. In the pack Ross, Matthew and Nathan worked really hard and linked up well! In the backs Tom and Matt were particularly impressive while Malcom provided quick ball at 9.
Well done to Mr Hales who worked hard with the group all year. We're looking forward to seeing these boys in action next season already!
Table tennis. Four senior boys played in Gonzaga College in the Snr. Table Tennis Leinster Cup. Wilson's four players, Oscar, Santos Garcia, Javier & Victor played extremely competitive opponents in Gonzaga. The pressure was on Wilson's after Victor & Santos won both their singles rounds but due to a close unfortunate loss for Oscar & Javier, this meant Wilson's taking the lead would depend on the doubles game results. All boys played very entertaining, tight games for the doubles which also resulted in a draw. This made for a very tense final which Wilsons delightfully took victory of. Well done to both teams.
Friday 20th April.
Rugby. There are more photos on the school's Facebook page.
The Senior Boys Rugby team travelled to Donnybrook to take on St Mary's in the Foster cup final. Conditions were perfect for rugby with no breeze and the sun shining bright.
St Mary's were first to score. Some patient build-up play led to their number 7 going over from a pick and drive. Wilson's responded 5 minutes before half time through their captain William. A scrum set play resulted in William crashing over under the posts leaving a simple conversation for Ryan. Half time score 7-5.
The second half started similarly with St. Mary's scoring early. To their credit Wilson's defended aggressively and made St Mary's work very hard for their score. Alex, David and Evan setting the tone. The score was 12-7 in favour of St Mary's with 10 minutes played in the second half. The next score was always going to be crucial and it unfortunately went to St Mary's. Wilson's can feel hard done by not to have a couple of penalties in the build up to the try. The referee seemed to ignore clear holding on twice. Eventually the defence was stretched enough for the St. Mary's number 12 to stretch over. 19-7 with 1 play left in the game.
Off the restart William fielded the ball. Some excellent build up play from Robbie and Ryan eventually ended up in Evan getting over the line. Ryan converted leaving the final score 19-14. Wilson's never gave up. A common theme throughout the season.
The boys have been outstanding all season and can hold their heads high after a fantastic performance. Credit must to the 6th years on this their last game in a Wilson's jersey. They set a very high standard for future teams in the school to follow! Jeff, Franklin, William, Ross, Ryan, Robbie, Guglielmo and Richard - thank you for all of your efforts over the last six years in Blue and Gold.
