Wednesday 21st November.
Rain caused the cancellation of a lot of the fixtures today.
Hockey. The Senior A Girls team will be plaing St. Conleth's away. The first half of the game was a tension filled game that seemed to go on forever. Unfortunately no goals were scored from our end. But luckily our defenders were strong enough to not let any balls go by them.
The second half of the game started with better spirits as the team was given an amazing pep talk by their two captains Avril and Róisín. We were unlucky to have two goals narrowly missed. Then suddenly the other team scored on the counter attack.
Wilson’s did not put their heads down and kept creating chances. With five minutes to go Ellen passed the ball to Alex who controlled it perfectly, she passed it inside the circle to Michaella who scored the equaliser. The game ended 1-1.
Basketball. The Boys team will be playing St. Conleth's at home.
Rugby. The Senior Boys continue their McMullen Cup competition with a home fixture against St. Ciaran's, Kells. The weather was dry but cold which allowed for some free flowing rugby in the first half.
Wilson’s got off to an excellent start. Nathan claimed the kickoff and offloaded to Conor who did well to beat a couple of defenders and score the first try under the posts. 2 more tries from David and 1 from Owen in the opening 20 minutes really ended the game as a contest. Alex and Conor added tries before half time with Sam converting all of them to leave the half time score 42-0.
A host of changes (12 in total) throughout the second half disrupted structure and momentum slightly and St Ciaran’s restricted Wilson’s to 1 try in the second half. There was a fine individual try by Denians after Harry and Evan had made good ground.
St Ciaran’s to their credit never gave up and added 2 tries in the second half. This left the final score 49-10. A great Cup win all things considered.
It was great to see so many of last year’s junior team get exposure at senior cup level and perform well. Harry C who started was well supported by Oisin, Mark and Denians all played very well when introduced. Owen, Evan, Harry and Sam performed very well in the backs.
Next week we have a break from games for the seniors while many of them sit exams. The following week they take on the winners of St Paul’s and Drogheda Grammar in the quarter final.
Debating and Public Speaking: Sophie won the Soroptomists competition (one of two overall winners) and will go on represent Wilson’s in the Regional Final against Dublin, Athlone and Dundalk. Sophie delivered an electric speech on the empowerment of women and did the school proud. Esther and Nora May also delivered speeches, and it was a great first start for both TYs.
Competition was intense, with many well-prepared speeches, and with strong competition from Castlepollard Community College (also a winner) in particular, as well as St Columba’s (Killucan), and Loreto College.
