Today in 3rd Year Religious Education we looked at how Jesus was accused of blasphemy by the Pharisees. This topic got us thinking about the upcoming blasphemy referendum later in the month.
We discussed the definition of blasphemy and how it would have meant something different then to what it means in Irish law today. The important points to consider in Irish law are whether a large number of people have been caused outrage by the statement/action, and if the person meant for them to be outraged.
In the story of the healing of the paralysed man when Jesus claimed he could forgive sins, we asked ourselves, did Jesus cause a large group of people outrage, and was that his intention? Have a look to see if our 3rd years think Jesus would face a €25,000 fine in Ireland today!
