On Thursday 8th November, 8 students attended the second round of the UCD Junior Schools Debating Championships representing Wilson's Hospital School with Mr Burke: Form 2 students Caoimhe, Aimee, Andrea and Sarah-Jane and Form 1 students Grace, Charlotte, Rachel and Oisín. As usual, competition on the night was of a very high standard, with very little separating prize-winners and non-prizewinners.
The team of Form 1 students Charlotte and Grace managed to see off competition from the other 6 schools in their round to take first place, arguing successfully that "This house regrets the perception of soldiers as heroes." This places the team with a good chance of breaking (making the top 16 teams knockout) if they are again prize-winners in the third round.
The other three teams enjoyed arguing for and against the motions "This house regrets the perception of soldiers as heroes" and "This house would not eat meat," both of which proved thought-provoking and challenging motions. All teams are looking forward to the final round of debating on Thursday 22 December, and thank everyone for all the support!
New debaters are always welcome to the club, which runs on Tuesdays from 4.00-5.30pm and Wednesday from 2.00 to 3.30pm.
